Hayleys Fabric Partners with CmiA
Hayleys Fabric PLC has become the first fabric mill in Sri Lanka to partner with Cotton made in Africa (CmiA), an initiative of the Aid by Trade Foundation, is one of the world’s leading standards for sustainably produced cotton.
The goal of CmiA is to improve the living conditions of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa while protecting the environment and increasing transparency in the textile supply chain. CmiA-verfified cotton is in demand in the global market, with a worldwide alliance of textile companies and brands paying a licensing fee to use the CmiA seal. CmiA then reinvests the licensing revenue towards meeting its objectives, as outlined above. Textiles verified by Cotton made in Africa are marked with a small label for easy identification by consumers.
CmiA initiative is built on the three pillars of sustainability, which form the core of Cotton made in Africa’s standard:
- People: CmiA supports smallholder farmers, working to promote gender equality, dignified labour conditions, and respect for the rights of children
- Planet: CmiA is committed to protecting soil, water, biodiversity, the climate, and the environment, including by banning the use of genetically modified organisms and reducing the negative effects of crop protection.
- Prosperity: CmiA facilitates access to high-quality equipment and is actively helping improve productivity, fibre quality, and overall living condition
